Society History

From Local Enthusiasts to a Regional Heritage Fixture

The Amersham & District Motorbus Society was founded in the early 1990s, born from a shared enthusiasm for Britain’s public transport history—particularly the buses and routes that once served Amersham, High Wycombe, Chesham and surrounding areas.

Following the privatisation of government-run bus services, many local bus services gradually disappeared from everyday life. Bus enthusiast and Society founder John Hutchinson decided to hold a small, volunteer-led running day in Amersham to celebrate and preserve this part of local history, which due to its success became an annual fixture.

What began as a modest gathering has since grown into a respected organisation which runs four detailed and organised heritage bus events annually across the Home Counties each year, alongside the occasional members-only outing. The Society remains proudly not-for-profit and voluntary, with no ticketed entry, no commercial services, and no private hire operations.

Our mission is simple

The events continue to thrive thanks to the generous time and effort of bus owners, drivers, conductors, and volunteers who help make each running day possible. The buses themselves—many privately owned and painstakingly restored—run timetabled services on original routes for the public to enjoy, often attracting visitors of all ages, from lifelong enthusiasts to families discovering classic transport for the first time.

The Society is also supported through the sale of our souvenir event programmes, membership subscriptions, and memorabilia—essential contributions that help cover event costs and fuel for the buses.

We’re proud of our roots and even prouder of the community that supports us. From our very first running day in Amersham to our most recent events further afield in Greater London, our passion remains unchanged: bringing history to life on the roads once again.

Committee members

The Amersham & District Motorbus Society is run by a committee who organise the Running Days and the annual programme of events (including the Christmas Dinner). Committee meetings are held on a regular basis during the event season, on average every 6 weeks.

Members can be elected onto the committee at the AGM which ordinarily takes place in March/April.

If you wish to attend a committee meeting or discuss ideas for trips or events to add to the calendar, please contact us. We always welcome new ideas and discussions of events that the Society can be involved in!

If you are a member and would like to attend a committee meeting, please contact us to receive details of the next meeting. Members have a constitutional right to attend Committee meetings to observe should they wish to.
